Talkin Monster

Hi Isabella!

I think maybe you said your first sentence yesterday. Or I could be imagining it. But it sounded like you said, "I sit down."

Although I guess even if you did say that it still wouldn't be your first sentence because you've been saying, "It's Daddy's" for a while now.

Some other words I may have forgotten to mention:
Lights
Ernie
Please
Dirty
Shi-shi
Doodoo
Home
Go go
O (pointing to the letter)
A (pointing to the letter)
E (pointing to A...)
More
Teeth

And just now I handed you two pieces of sandwich and asked you how many and you said "two!" How did you learn that??

I love you!

Love,
Mommy

Vocabulary Explosion

Dear Isabella,

I can't keep up with your vocabulary - I suppose at some point I'll have to stop trying! But here are some of your latest (if I repeat what I've already written that means you say it a lot!):

Monny (Mommy)
Dah-ee (Daddy)
All done
Cheese
Peese (please)
Shoes
Ernie
Baby
Bubble
Wassee (washy)
Ba-pa (Grandpa)
Yay
Ashes-ashes
Apple
Doodoo (yeah..)
Go-go
Agua
Nai-nai
On
Off
Up
Ees (it's - as in "ees dah-ee" for "it's Daddy")
Halph (help)
Beep
Pop
Beed (bib)
Ah-tee (aunty)
Unko (uncle)
And probably more that I can remember right now!

You ask for what you want (and you certainly know what you want!) and your body language is more and more like a kid and less and less like a toddler every day. If something is out of place or out of order you are quick to point it out.

It seems like you're also developing certain fears - like it seems like you're becoming afraid of the dark and of unexpected noises. I guess that is a sign of growing up but I hope you're not terrified of the dark like I was when I was a kid (and a teen..and adult..haha!).

You're very mature in certain ways - when you're starting to descend into a tantrum or meltdown I've been trying to teach you to "breathe" and calm yourself down. So far you don't really get it but watching me take deep breaths really seems to calm you down. It's actually kind of amazing.

Also you're more and more spontaneously affectionate - and we love it!

Oh, and you got your first jewelry present from a boy! Yikes! At Mommy and Daddy's vow renewal ceremony, Camdyn gave you a little butterfly necklace. It's so cute on you!

You are such a joy. I love you!

Love,
Mommy

Rain

Dear Isabella,

Do you want to know how smart you are?

Yesterday we were walking from the car, and it had rained so the ground was wet. You pointed at the ground and said, "Uh-oh!"

So I said, "Uh-oh it rained!" And you pointed at the air and said, "Agua!"

How did you learn that? You amaze me every day.

Love,
Mommy

Words

Dear Isabella,

You have more words again! "Bao" (ball), Abby, and Dad. You also said "pop" once when we were playing with bubbles and "eye" twice yesterday when you poked my eye because I was pretending to sleep.

You are also becoming interested in the potty and we try to put you on the potty before bath each night. Once at Grandma's house you happened to make shishi when you were up there and you were so proud! You thought it was the greatest thing, Grandma said, and kept making your sign for "more." Last night I put you on and you sat for a little bit and I asked, "all done?" And you shook your head, and after a couple seconds you made shishi again! Maybe it's time to start thinking about really potty training you.

You had a check up today and you're 24 pounds which is the 25-50th percentile, and 32.25 inches which is the 50-75th percentile.

You always keep us on our toes with all the climbing up and down the couch, and being curious about everything. You are also very opinionated about what you want and when. I'm not sure where you get that from. ;)

Also, you say "up" when you mean up and also when you mean down!

You want to be friends with Orange but he's still not very sure about it. Your feelings get so hurt when he doesn't want to play.

That's it for now Monkey. I love you!

Love,
Mommy

My Monkey

Dear Isabella,

Your name isn't Bean anymore - it's Monkey! You're such a rascal climber. In a flash you scramble up onto any furniture you can. You sure keep us busy.

You're also talking! Your words so far: no (go figure), up, oh-way (Orange), mum-mum, Mom, wow, meow.

Your speech therapist told Daddy last week that we have to completely take away your pacifier even at naptime and bedtime. We thought it would be a terrible struggle. The first night you cried for exactly 20 minutes. The second night was less than 10 minutes. The third night was about one minute and now you don't cry. You do ask for it and we have to show you all the places we used to hide it but once you see it's gone, you are satisfied.

You're such a big girl already. Slow down, Monkey!

Love,
Mommy

Little Lady

Hi my little angel!

Right now I'm sitting in the car outside our apartment because you're napping in your carseat and I don't want to wake you up. You're snoring like an old man, it's so cute. :)

You still aren't really talking in words but you're picking up all kinds of other stuff! Like you can climb up on the couch by yourself now which is scary because you scurry up there in the blink of an eye. And you of course know where we "hide" the TV remote AND you know how to turn the TV on by yourself.

You also are becoming very particular about choosing your own clothes and shoes. I think we're going to have our hands full with a very girly girl!

But you still love running around outside and getting into the rocks and leaves and all that dirtiness. Of course, when you're done you always wipe your hands off like a little lady.

You do Itsy Bitsy Spider motions all the way through (but only if no one is looking) and you LOVE Three Little Monkeys, Little Piggies, and Little Cabin. In fact at bed time you insist on doing our routine of monkeys, piggies (both feet!) and cabin at least once before we go to bed.

It's time for you to get up from your nap baby doll. Hopefully you're not too much of a grumpy pants when I wake you up!

Love you!
Mommy

Too much to catch up on!

Dear Isabella,

You are having so much fun growing up it's getting hard to keep up with you!

You love going to the playground to run around and you love going on the swings with me. Yesterday you bonked your head pretty hard though when you tripped going up some steps. You have a bump on your head above your right eye but you're okay.

You're learning signs and you know how to sign "more" and you're getting the hang of "eat" (though we call it "mum mum").

You're very particular about some things - like when I'm rocking you while you drink your goodnight bottle you insist I hold your pacifier in my left hand - not my right hand. If its on the bookshelf next to us or in my right hand you stop drinking and open my left hand and tickle it.

For some reason you don't like the water going on your head in the bath anymore. You cry almost every night. But sorry, as your hair gets longer (and because you perspire so much!) we have to wash your hair every night or you'll be the stinky kid in class.

Speaking of your hair - it is slowly getting fuller and longer but so far it still has those cute curls at the back of your neck. And that beautiful brown red with light almost blonde notes. People pay lots of money to get their hair the color combination yours is!

Love you, my little angel!

Words

Dear Isabella,

You're taking some time to start talking but here are your first three words:
1. No (of course!)
2. Mum-mum (another shocker)
2. Uh-oh!

You actually almost never say no anymore, you just shake your head. And you just discovered "uh-oh!" so you kind of say it any time, not just when uh-oh is needed. It's still cute though! I absolutely love your little voice.

I love you!

Mommy

Tough Parenting Lesson

It's tough to stick by your parenting philosophies while it seems like the rest of the world thinks you're nuts or at least a little batty.

While I know we're not the strictest parents or alone in our thinking, it seems like our efforts to keep Isabella away from TV and other "screens" (computers, phones and tablets, mainly) and to feed her healthy foods (and steer clear of fast food or quick-service food) are definitely the exception.

With the glut of pictures and videos we post of what probably seems like her every action, it feels like we're the only ones not broadcasting her first Happy Meal, her daily Starbucks drink, her chicken nugget addiction. I made almost all her baby food from scratch, and now that she's eating "table food," we try to eat healthy and make a portion of our own home made food for her. With the exception of the week she was in intense teething pain and had to revert to baby-food consistency food (we gave her Gerber toddler food), my biggest cheat is making a Lean Cuisine and using it for two meals or using frozen veggies instead of fresh. The first bite of cake or any dessert she had was her birthday cake (unless you count fruits as dessert). The treat that gets her the most excited is a bowl of strawberries.

We do this simply because we want to raise her with healthier eating habits than we ourselves developed as young adults in a world full of mystery food and shocking nutrition content. (Why would there be so much sugar in a hamburger?!) The studies that we've caught wind of report scary statistics - more than 1/3 of US children and adolescents are now obese, children in the US as young as three are showing early markers of heart disease, more and more kids are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, a disease normally diagnosed in adults 40 and older. If we can make healthy eating and active living a habit and the "norm," Isabella won't ever have to make a lifestyle adjustment to save her health - the hope is that it will be built in.

It's not just the food. We started out with the ambitious intention to shield Isabella from all screens until age two, as is recommended by the experts. Well, when the village raises the child, everyone in the village gets a say in how that child is raised, so we had to make a few compromises. Still, she gets at most one episode of Sesame Street per day, and never during meals or snacks. This is a pretty huge adjustment in our pixelated world, but it was important to us.

Everyone around us, however, seems to talk about how their baby or toddler is so into Yo Gabba Gabba or Ni Hao Kai Lan or any number of kids' shows. Worse yet, we have people talking to us about their three-year-olds that read - apparently because they use Baby Einstein videos. And I have to admit that I get the draw - when we do let her watch Sesame Street she is so happy and so into it, and what parent doesn't want to see their kid light up like that? Who wouldn't want a reading three-year-old?

Even with all the studies and reports telling us that what we're trying to do is "best" for her (try googling "Does Baby Einstein really work?" and the academic reports on the first several pages of results will all say it does not and it could actually cause delays), it's really hard to stick by what we believe when it seems we're the only ones swimming upstream.

Isabella has still never had a french fry and drinks only milk or water - and I hope it stays like that as long as possible. I don't want her to be an outcast among her classmates in the future ("What?! You've never had a tall non-fat kid's temp zebra hot chocolate with whip and caramel drizzle?!") but more than that I want her to develop habits that shield her from obesity, diabetes and premature heart disease. She isn't an expert at navigating her way around a tablet or clicking a mouse and to be honest, even though those are skills she will need if she is to make it in this day and age, this is one area of "development" I wouldn't mind her being delayed on.

It's really hard to stand by what we believe when that parental competition niggles the back of your mind: so-and-so's kid can do that - if we let Isabella try, would she be able to also? What is she missing out on by us limiting her exposure to this stuff? And there's a difference and a balance between sticking by what you believe and being totally rigid and closed to additional information. So when I doubt myself I try to remember two things: one, we based these philosophies on research from credible sources (not Yahoo! discussion boards, but respected and proven academic institutions). Yes we may be eliminating some opportunities by doing what we're doing, but I think we're also opening windows into worlds that are quickly being forgotten by our society. Two: as a parent there's only so much you can do - after that, the rest of the world and your own kid's innate tendencies take control.

While I don't think this is the first "tough parenting lesson" we've had, it's the first one that seems like a big deal to me. And it's a lesson I'll probably be continuously re-learning.

Cut Lip

Dear Isabella,

Today you fell while you were running (yup, running!) and bit your top lip. You hardly cried so I didn't think you hit your face, but then you touched your mouth and there was blood. I panicked just a teeny bit but you handled yourself like a champ.

You are a very "determined" little girl. I put that in quotes because Grandma says you're determined - I say you're stubborn! At dinner, usually you won't let me feed you anymore. You insist on feeding yourself. Of course you get about 50% in your mouth and 50% on your arms, face, lap, tray, chair, cat...Poor Orange! You're still not very good at using a spoon. When you try to use a spoon, if you get any food in your mouth it's just a coincidence. But you are very, very "determined" and one day soon I know you'll get it right.

You are testing your boundaries every day and it's fun to watch your personality blossom. You're truly a toddler now, but I still call you my little baby, and I probably always will. I promise by the time you're a teenager I won't call you that in front of your friends.

You still talk to your Abuela in Mexico almost every week on Skype and you talk to Lolo and Lola (and Aunty Cayla) in Hilo on FaceTime sometimes. This has made you very interested in technology which we're still trying to hide from you.

We went to Barwick Playground at Punahou on Father's Day and you had fun running around and playing with leaves. You're still a little too little to be interested in the swings or see-saw or slide. But you're getting bigger and stronger and learning more and more every day!

Mommy

That's My Girl - Simply Organized!

Dear Isabella,

Your latest hobby is sorting toys! You have a basket for your wooden blocks, a pouch for your MegaBlocks, and a pouch for your "baby toys" (the toys you had and outgrew at Aunty Gladys's house). You know which toys go in which containers and you love dumping them out, and putting them back in the correct place. That's my girl - organizing from the start!

Then again, you also sometimes place a book in the middle of the floor with such purpose and matter-of-factness that maybe you have some unconventional ideas of what "a place for everything and everything in its place" means!

Or maybe you're just a normal toddler. :)

Mommy

Growing Faster Than The Speed of Blog!

Dear Isabella,

I can hardly keep up with you! It has been a while since I left you a note so let's try and play a little catch up..

You are almost able to run now, so it's getting tougher to keep up with you. You love walking around carrying a purse especially if it has something in it. When you're carrying anything, you walk around the room so purposefully and seriously, as if you are on a very important mission.

You have a little chair at Grandma and Grandpa's house, and for some reason you like to put your toys on it and then sit on top of your toy in the chair.

You are a total bookworm! Book after book you bring to us and sometimes you like to "read" (turn the pages of) the same book over and over. It's the first thing you go for every morning.

You're also learning how to put your Megablocks together. Daddy and I can't wait till we can get you real Legos and have a Lego table! We promise to share.

You are becoming a bit opinionated my dear. At meal time sometimes you can be very picky and stubborn. We went through a few days that you hardly ate! And another few days where you only wanted zucchini. And another few days where you would only eat if you could feed yourself! And you have a little temper on you - if you can't do something right away you have been known to throw the toy down in frustration. One night you even jumped up and down a couple times in anger. Hmm, I wonder if that temper is from me or Daddy... :)

And this has been true for a while but you still LOVE putting toys inside other toys. In the bath, as long as I give you a cup and some toys that fit inside, you could probably stay in there all night! Putting them in..taking them out..putting them in, in a different order.. And you're so determined about it, very focused.

We have been taking you in the baby pool in Grandma and Grandpa's yard or taking you to the beach for the past few weekends. You sure love to play in the water! You're not so sure about sand though..

The other day I thought I heard you say "no" as you shook your head, and then a few mornings later I heard you imitating Daddy when he was making a cow "moo" noise from a book. Are those your first words, Bean? Let's wait till you say "Mommy" and just call that your first word. :)

You follow directions pretty well, including when we tell you "no" and you are very helpful cleaning up your toys. You help me pick up your blocks every day (because when we open the block bag, you excitedly dump them out EVERYWHERE!) and are also good about putting your books back on the shelf when we ask you. Sometimes you even put a toy back in the box before we even ask you to! When we ask you to give us something you've picked up off the ground, you mostly do right away. I'm so proud of you (and we feel lucky to have such a good, smart little girl)!

That's all for now, Isabella. We are so blessed to have you.

Love love love,
Mommy

What's It Like To Be A Toddler?

Dear Isabella,

You had so much fun on your birthday! You played with all your guests and you didn't need a nap. What a big girl!

This week you have been so happy to have your own shelf on our bookshelf and you've been playing nicely with all your new toys.

You don't drink formula anymore - just cow's milk. This makes me kind of sad because it means you're getting to be a little girl instead of my little baby.

You are also learning to wink...kind of. If Daddy or I wink at you, you smile and blink back at us. You think it's so funny!

The other day I was giving you a bath and you stood up and even though we have a nonslip mat, you stepped backwards and slipped. You bonked the back of your head on the tub floor and you were so scared and crying so hard! Mommy felt so bad for you. But in a couple minutes you were ready to play in the bath again. Mommy and Daddy were so proud of our brave girl. And good thing too because you were so dirty from playing hard that day!

So now that you're officially a toddler, what is it like? You seem to have fun every day and you're such a happy baby. Sorry, toddler. You still love swinging your legs - we'll have to break that habit before we take you to the movies.

When we tell you, "kiss!" you open your mouth wide and wait for the person to kiss you. It's pretty funny.

Love,
Mommy

Happy Birthday Isabella!

Dear Isabella,

Happy first birthday my little angel! I cannot believe it has been a year. I am so proud you are mine, I can't believe how beautiful you are, and I am so grateful for how you make me smile every single day.

You're already such a big little girl. Walking around with confidence, having fun carrying two toys (or more!) at once, learning to play with Orange nicely, making friends, practicing feeding yourself and learning to point at words you know. You're so smart and determined. I love the determined look you get on your face when you are trying to do something new.

I think back to when you were a newborn. You were so little - I think you have doubled in height at least! I remember you sleeping in your bassinet beside our bed and watching your little legs go up...then down! And up...then down! I hold your hand now and marvel at how little and chubby it is.

I made a video for you birthday. I hope you like it. I love you, Bean.

Love,
Mommy

Walking For Real

Dear Isabella,

Well I guess it's official: you are a walker. You still crawl when you're in a rush but you are walking more and more every day. I'm so proud of you and I love watching you grow and develop your personality. It's funny to get to know your little mannerisms.

I'm a little sad too. This year has gone by so fast. I hold you at bed time and think of the little wiggle worm with a floppy neck you once were, bundled in your magic blanket. Now you're a curious little monkey just like Curious George. Can you please slow down my little Bean?

Love,
Mommy

Mommy's Engineer

Hi Isabella!

The other day I showed you how to stack your Playskool rings a couple times and you seemed to sort of understand the concept.

Then today you took your rings and just started stacking them correctly all by yourself! You are so smart!

You always want to see how things work and you sure do learn quickly. I tried to get you to do it again but you lost interest pretty quickly. I hope you're not like me when you grow up - once I figure out I can do something I don't care as much about doing it anymore.

Here's a video of you doing it until you lost interest:

Almost a year - already??

Dear Isabella, Can you believe it, we are getting ready to celebrate your FIRST BIRTHDAY! How exciting! My Bean, you are the sweetest thing in my life and make me smile every day. I know everyone says this about all kinds of things, but TIME has just been FLYING by. This year has been such a whirlwind. I love you more every single day, can you even believe that? Lately you have been having fun talking to your friend Other Baby in the reflection, and you even offer each other your toys. Somehow she's always wearing the same clothes and always has the same toy. And you sure interrupt each other a lot. But you're always SO happy to see each other. You have also been having fun putting your toys inside each other. The other day you tried to put Minnie Mouse in your oven, and you kept putting your yellow kitchen spoon into your green garbage can. You also love to put your crab and octopus tub toys inside your bath cup. You are learning how to put the stacking rings onto the pin, and you love mixing and matching your stacking cups by putting them inside each other. You're getting to be quite the character, sweet pea, and I love watching you learn and grow and discover. What a year it has been! Love, Mommy

First Steps

Dear Isabella,

You took your first steps yesterday! You have been practicing by walking along the furniture and standing up by yourself but yesterday you took three steps by yourself on purpose.

You were holding onto the couch and then you let go, and stood still for a second..then took one step, and then a second and you started to wobble!..and caught your balance and stood still for a second..and then you took a third step! Wow!

You haven't repeated your performance yet but I'm sure it'll be no time till you're walking around like it's the easiest thing in the world.

Daddy was a little sad he missed it because he was supposed to be off from work and he had to work late. But since I think you're pretty sure to do it again soon, I don't think he has anything to worry about missing out. ;)

Congratulations sweetheart! Good job!

Favorites (for now!)

Dear Isabella,

Some current favorites of yours:

Giving a toy (or your pacifier) to someone and then taking it back - again and again!

Throwing EVERY toy out of your toy box.

Clapping! You even clapped when you were crying because you didn't want to take a nap.

Papaya.

Putting things inside other things - putting little cups inside big cups, your tub toys inside your rinsing cup, your kitchen toys inside your kitchen oven - and taking them out again (and again and again).

Looking at books upside down.

Getting tiny samples of mommy and daddy's food - you feel like such a big girl!

That's all for now. I love you!

Love,
Mommy

PS - Don't tell Grandpa Nick, but we let you try ice cream. Definitely not your favorite right now - you don't like the cold!

More "Firsts"

Dear Isabella,

Oh dear it's been a month already! You went to the beach and swam in the ocean for the first time and loved it. You kept finding pebbles and trying to eat them. You kept Daddy and I busy that day! You are eating more foods - you had a couple of bites of Daddy's asparagus and loved it and also a bite of cake and loved it (almost TOO much, you kept demanding more!) which is good news for your birthday coming up.

You're almost walking. You walk along the furniture like you've been doing it forever and let go to stand on your own sometimes too. I swear you've taken one step between pieces of furniture a bunch of times but I haven't been able to capture it.

You don't use a chair or baby tub for your bath anymore, just a nonslip mat. You're talking more every day. Sometimes we talk to Hilo Grandpa, Lola and Auntie Cayla on FaceTime and they're so happy to see you! And almost every Monday you get to see your Abuela on Skype. She loves talking to you also.

Tonight we brushed your teeth for the first time with an actual toothbrush since now you have SIX teeth! Wow!

I wish I could stop time, little Bean, and have you this cute and cuddly for always! I love watching you explore and learn and discover. And even when you're playing on your own, the way you turn back to look at us every few minutes like, "Did you see that, Mommy?!" is so fun. Your happy smile and bright eyes when you hear music or clap your toys together, your little voice when you call out to Orange, your contented sigh when you put your head down on my shoulder - I wish I could bottle up those moments to live over and over again!

Here are some recent pictures of you my sweetheart. You're growing so fast!

My first trip!

Dear Isabella,

You had your first trip on an airplane today! We went to Hilo just for the day to visit Lolo and Lola and Aunty Cayla, and meet Hilo Great Grandma, Aunty Felipa, Aunty Remy and all the uncles.

You were such an easy traveler! You made everyone at the airport smile, and you slept before the plane took off both going and coming, and you had fun seeing everyone in Hilo.

Lolo and Lola had blocks for you to play with and you had fun knocking down the towers we made with them.

Our flight coming home was a little delayed but you were still very well behaved and only fussed a little because you were tired.

Here are some pictures from the day.

You're such an angel, Isabella. Daddy and I are so proud of you.

Love,
Mommy

Holidays and Talking

Dear Isabella,

So your first Christmas and New Year's has come and gone and boy was it exciting for everyone! You got lots of presents you lucky girl. We spent Christmas Eve at home so Santa would be sure to find you, and early Christmas morning you found a stocking full of goodies. Then we went to Grandma and Grandpa Nick's house and you saw a lot of your aunties and uncles there, and your cousin Madelyn. Everyone exchanged gifts and you had a great time even though you were a little overwhelmed.

You had your first real cold, complete with a fever, starting on Christmas morning. Luckily it only lasted a couple of days.

This past weekend was New Years. You spent the night on New Year's Eve with Grandma and Grandpa Nick, and then on New Years Day we all went to Aunty Roberta's house to see all your aunties and uncles and cousins. You played with cousin Devin for a little while and shared toys with him! Did you know he's only 3 weeks younger than you? His mommy is Aunty Carol. You were a little overwhelmed there too because you have such a BIG family and there's so many people and so much going on! But you'll get used to it. It's fun having a big family!

The past couple weeks you have gotten more and more steady on your feet. And you're talking so much! You say "Ba Ba Ba Ba!" and a couple times you've said "Ga Ba" and "pa pa pa" and once I heard you say "goo ga." your favorite so far is "babababa" and when you're upset and crying sometimes you say "ma ma ma."

You still have all your favorite foods but you also love spinach and pork chops.

You're growing so fast! I know I say that every time. But it's true! Slow down, just a teeny bit, okay?

Love,
Mommy
